About Spot Goes to Hollywood

The central character in the game is, of course, Spot. Spot has somehow become trapped in a movie projector. As he jumps from film to film, he encounters many classic film genres; these make up the various levels of the game. The main levels are a pirate movie, an adventure movie, and a horror movie, but there are many other bonus films to unlock.

A pretty, difficult-to-read sequel to Cool Spot whose US cart sits above the middle.

This is the Genesis / Mega Drive version of Spot Goes to Hollywood, a platformer from Eurocom and the sequel to Cool Spot. You control Spot, the mascot of the 7 Up soft drink, as he travels through movie settings to free his friends; on this version the main levels are a pirate movie, a horror movie, an adventure movie and a sci-fi movie. Acclaim published it in North America in 1995 and Virgin Interactive Entertainment in Europe in November 1995, and Tommy Tallarico is credited with the music.

Critics praised the graphics and level design but faulted the sound effects, the controls, and objects that are hard to see. GamePro's UK edition was warmer, praising the gameplay and graphics.

What the press said at the time

“but that aside, Spot goes to Hollywood is the type of quality platformer that Mega Drive owners are crying out for.”

— GamePro, December 1995

“This quantum leap from the original Cool Spot retained all its successor's charm and playability while adding a successful isometric viewpoint and some fiendish puzzles into the mix”

— Mean Machines Sega, February 1996

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits above the middle. The European loose cart usually costs less than the US one, while a complete European copy usually costs about the same. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
