A climbing game with spoken effects that Interphase cleaned up from a Sirius computer original.

Interphase, a Canadian publisher, brought Sirius Software's 1983 computer game to the ColecoVision as Squish 'Em Featuring Sam. Electronic Games reviewed it in September 1984 and said Interphase cleaned up a few rough spots in the original and added computer-generated speech, making a good game more appealing. Sam must climb a 48-story building to retrieve a satchel of cash while creatures scuttle back and forth. Wikipedia notes that the speech needs no extra hardware, and that Sam says the title line when he squishes an enemy.

That makes it one of the few ColecoVision games with speech.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 3 No. 1April 1984Graphics ★★★ · Play-Action ★★★½

“Squish'Em by Sirius is one of those marvelously silly games that are so much fun to play, but the designers at Interphase have made the game irresistible with the addition of Sam and his comments.”

— Computer Entertainer, April 1984

“Squish 'Em is a fast-paced, fairly straightforward cartridge that holds up well under replay. Interphase has given new life to an unjustly overlooked electronic game.”

— Electronic Games, September 1984

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.

How the ColecoVision version differs

Electronic Games described the ColecoVision edition as a re-tooled version of the game Sirius Software published in 1983 for several home computers.

  • Commodore 64. Video Games Player gave the Commodore 64 version a B-, saying that once you learn to slide and squish it feels like dancing.

Before you buy

The ColecoVision museum catalogue rates it Rare, and no complete-copy price is tracked on the page, so ask for photos of the box and manual and test the speech. A standard ColecoVision controller is all that is needed. Interphase also made Sewer Sam; do not mix the two up.
