One of Imagic's three debut games, a simple first-person space shooter that critics liked.

Bob Smith designed Star Voyager for the Atari 2600, and Imagic published it in April 1982 as one of its three debut releases, alongside Demon Attack and Trick Shot. You fly a ship in first person, destroy enemy ships and pass through seven star portals. It was inspired by Doug Neubauer's Star Raiders, which also inspired Activision's Starmaster, and all three reached the 2600 the same year.

It was the first game Smith made after leaving Atari to help form Imagic. He favored a first-person view because he wanted his games to be as realistic and immersive as possible. Critics praised the gameplay and graphics, and saw it as a simpler, more action-focused take on Star Raiders.

How it was made

Designed by Bob Smith, his first game after leaving Atari for Imagic. Released in the United States in April 1982 and in Europe later that year, among Imagic's first releases there.

What the press said at the time

“It may not have the sweep of some other space cartridges, but Star Voyager is an exciting and challenging solo contest.”

— Electronic Games, August 1982

“Star Voyager is a simpli- fied through-the-window space game that appeals to more aggressive (less strategic) video pilots.”

— JoyStik, December 1982
