About Street Racer
Street Racer is an action racing game for one to four players played from an overhead view. The screen is split into two lanes; in one or two player games, each player has a lane. In three and four player games, players must share the lanes. Each game has a two minute and sixteen second time limit, and your goal is to earn as many points as possible by the end of this time. In addition to the basic racing version, several other game variations are included as well.

A launch-day racer, cheap and common, worth owning as one of the original nine.
Street Racer was one of the nine launch titles for the Atari VCS, released in September 1977. Larry Kaplan programmed it. Sears sold the same game in its Tele-Games line as Speedway II.
It is a cheap cartridge in every form, and its interest today is mostly as part of the launch lineup.
How it was made
Programmed by Larry Kaplan at Atari, Inc. for the system's launch in September 1977, with a PAL release in 1978.
Cartridge & preservation record
Program size 2 KB, measured from the preserved dump.
Catalogue number as recorded for the physical release.
Worth knowing
- Club price cut, 1982. By summer 1982 the Atari Club's Cartridge Checklist had already cut this launch-era cartridge to $12.95, while most other basic titles stayed at $22.95.
- 1981 dealer price. Atari's confidential retailer price list for January 1 to June 1, 1981 lists Street Racer (CX2612) in its basic tier: dealers paid $14.00 against a suggested retail price of $22.95.
Before you buy
Low risk; no reproductions are documented and all versions are inexpensive. Check which label you are looking at: Street Racer with Atari's standard label or its text label, or Speedway II, the Sears Tele-Games name for the same game, with a text label or a picture label. The game inside is the same, so the label only matters if you are collecting variants.
