About Sub Hunt

In Sub Hunt you control a group of four submarines one at a time. The goal is to destroy six convoys which will be attempting to cross the stretch of sea you are guarding. You can aim and fire torpedoes using a periscope view, have your submarine dive and surface, and adjust your speed. An overhead display allows you to strategically move your submarines in the position of your choice. There are five difficulty levels to choose from.

A Mattel naval action cart that is better remembered than played; fine for a gap in a Mattel set.

Sub Hunt is an Action-network Mattel game released in May 1982, with programming by John Hershberger and Tom Loughry. You command a wolfpack of submarines trying to stop an enemy invasion. Vidiot's 1982 listing pitched it as an exciting take on the submarine theme, which reads more as promotion than review.

It did return later: Wikipedia notes it was reissued in the Intellivision Lives! compilation. The cartridge itself is a modest pick unless you collect Mattel's Action line.

How it was made

Programming by John Hershberger and Tom Loughry for Mattel Electronics, released in May 1982.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 1 No. 6September 1982Graphics ★★★★ · Play-Action ★★★★
JoyStik Vol. 1 No. 4January 1983★★

“is a great game for aspiring naval strategists with its 2-screen set-up”

— Computer Entertainer, September 1982

“Up periscopes, let's get a destroyer. You're in commond as your sub seeks out enemy ships in Intellivision's exciting version of the good old submarine game theme.”

— Vidiot, October 1982

“Intricate graphics add little to the relatively unexciting game-play of Sub Hunt, a naval battle game of limited appeal.”

— JoyStik, January 1983

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system. JoyStik’s capsule ratings run from one star to five.

Worth knowing

  • From the Intellivision manual. Five skill levels run from Lieutenant to Admiral; at the top three levels each convoy has two destroyer escorts and the convoys move faster.
  • From the Intellivision manual. You control four submarines against six convoys, and sinking 36 ships wins the game.

Before you buy

Mattel packed two keypad overlays, and a complete copy should have them. Sears sold it in its own box under the same name. Loose carts are among the cheaper Mattel titles; the box and manual add most of the value.
