About Super Action Baseball
Colecovision's only baseball game and first of the Super Action series, Super Action Baseball was specially designed to work with the Super Action controllers. Batting is done with an angled view wherein you see your batter in the bottom-left of the screen and the pitcher at center-right. The top part of the screen is reserved for keeping an eye on the bases. As the ball approaches, your player attempts to hit the ball with his bat to send it flying. A successful hit will result in your player having to run around the bases. Running is done with the "wheel" on the top of the Super Action Controllers. Stealing is also possible. Fielding is simple, using the Super Action controllers, players have 4 buttons to correspond to each base. Thus the ball can be thrown at any of the bases instantly. Box art is fan made.

The best-looking baseball game of its day and the reason the Super Action Controllers exist, though both are awkward to learn.
Coleco's Super Action Baseball, with Gordon Martin and Associates credited as developer, came packed with a pair of the four-button Super Action Controllers. Computer Entertainer said in 1983 that it was worth the wait, praising a spring-training mode for practice at batting and fielding. One player fields and the other bats, and it has no real one-player game.
Electronic Games later called it by far the best videogame baseball ever made, with superior graphics and animation, but criticized its poor control, dull overhead view and complicated instructions. VG&CE in 1990 remembered its multiple camera angles but said the special controllers made it awkward and hurt sales. Computer Entertainer in 1985 said the large detailed players were only matched on another system by this game.
What the press said at the time
| Computer Entertainer Vol. 2 No. 6 | September 1983 | Graphics ★★★★ · Play-Action ★★★★ |
| JoyStik December 1983 | December 1983 | ★★★★ (4 of 5) |
| Electronic Fun with Computers & Games Vol. 2 No. 3 | January 1984 | 3 of 4 joysticks |
“Graphically, this game is everything Coleco has promised. The three-quarter view when the batter is up is terrific”
“This cartridge should have earned five stars, but Col-eco made the unforgivable error of eliminating a fundamental part of the game: bunting.”
“In fact, Super Action Baseball is the best playing computer baseball game around.”
“Super Action Baseball is far from perfect, especially in the area of control. It is different, though, and especially fun for playing against another human being”
Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system. Electronic Fun rated games out of four joysticks. JoyStik’s capsule ratings run from one star to five.
How the ColecoVision version differs
The cartridge came packaged with Coleco's new Super Action Controllers.
A 1990 magazine retrospective called it a sophisticated baseball simulation that broke ground with multiple camera angles, but said the required special controllers made it awkward to play and hurt its sales.
Worth knowing
- From the ColecoVision manual. Six game options cover batting practice, fielding drills, a pitch-and-bat mode and head-to-head baseball games.
- From the ColecoVision manual. Pitchers choose pitch speed with keypad keys 1 to 4 and pitch type with the Action Buttons: straight, curve inside, curve down and outside, or knuckle ball.
- From the ColecoVision manual. Replacement keypad overlays could be ordered directly from Coleco, sold two per set as Overlay Set No. 91987.
Before you buy
Super Action Baseball came with the Super Action Controllers, so check that a copy includes them before paying: a loose cartridge is cheap, but without the controllers it is not much use. Test every button and trigger on both units, as they are the weak point. A Bit Corp. Dina Personal Arcade console does not run this game. Only a loose price is tracked, so ask for photos of the box and controllers.
