About Super Action Football

Another game in the Super Action series that makes use of Coleco's Super Action Controllers. Play against the computer or go head-to-head with a friend over 4 quarters of football action. Step back and throw the long bomb to your wide receiver dancing in the end zone, kick the field goal, or lay down a bone-crunching tackle as you control one of 3 offensive or 3 defensive players. What victory dance will you do as you dive across the goal line in the final seconds of the game?

A deep football game designed for Coleco's Super Action Controllers, and playable only as intended if you also own them.

Coleco published Super Action Football with Davis & Nussrallah & Associates credited as developer, and it was designed for the Super Action Controllers. Computer Entertainer's review called it a very good football game for armchair quarterbacks, with offensive blocking patterns, running, passing and kicking plays, but disappointing in some respects and apparently not fully debugged despite repeated delays.

Coleco's June 1983 advertising listed it as coming that month, but it came out in June 1984, a year late. A later Computer Entertainer issue still held it up as offering more options than Nintendo's 10-Yard Fight, and a 1991 football history in Video Games & Computer Entertainment included it in a list of notable football games.

How it was made

Davis & Nussrallah & Associates are listed as developer; the game was announced for June 1983 and shipped later.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 3 No. 4July 1984Graphics ★★ · Play-Action ★★

“We were frankly surprised to note how much the players “blink” … reminiscent of some 2600 games we’ve seen.”

— Computer Entertainer, July 1984

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.

Worth knowing

  • From the ColecoVision manual. Two modes: Offense Only against a computer defense, or Head-to-Head Football where two players alternate offense and defense.
  • From the ColecoVision manual. You call plays in the huddle from the keypad overlay, choosing blocking or rushing patterns, a flankerback pass route or a blitz; the Speed Roller increases pass distance and runner speed.
  • From the ColecoVision manual. The game is two 15-minute halves, and the running clock only stops on out of bounds, incomplete passes, scores and penalties.

Before you buy

The controllers are the key: the Super Action Controllers came packed with Super Action Baseball, not with this cartridge, so a loose cartridge alone is a poor way to play it. Check that the seller includes a working pair, and look for the Super Action overlay, which a complete copy should have. The price row shows a loose copy at a small price, a box at a clear premium, and a factory-sealed copy far higher, so the sealed price is a collector's price.
