About Super Cobra

You're a helicopter gunship pilot on a daring and dangerous mission: air surveillance of enemy territory. Success depends on how far you can penetrate enemy airspace. Can you handle the pressure? Because the further you go, the more difficult the mission becomes. Show that you've got what it takes by maneuvering your chopper around craggy mountain peaks, through deep dark tunnels, and over tall city buildings. All while you face enemy tanks and missiles and weird sky-flying weapons. But you can fight back with high-flying, quick-thinking, fast-reaction moves. Good luck and good flying!

Parker Brothers' home version of Konami's Scramble follow-up, inexpensive but with one modern-hardware catch.

Super Cobra began as a 1981 Konami arcade shooter, a horizontally scrolling follow-up to Scramble that ran on the same hardware. Parker Brothers ported it widely. The 2600 version was developed by Roklan Software, credited to Mike Brodie, Bob Curtiss and Paul Crowley, and released in September 1983, with a PAL release in 1984.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 2 No. 6September 1983Graphics ★★★ · Play-Action ★★★

“SUPER COBRA is a good game with more than enough challenges for shoot-em-up fans.”

— Computer Entertainer, September 1983

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — stars in most years, diamonds in 1986–87 — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.

  • Adventure Vision. Entex's Adventure Vision port scored 9 out of 10 from Arcade Express in November 1982, which praised it as state-of-the-art scrolling action.
  • Atari 8-bit. Creative Computing called the Atari 8-bit version more challenging and better looking than other side-scrollers.

Worth knowing

  • 1984 Arkie Award. The 2600 Super Cobra received a Certificate of Merit in the Best Action Videogame category of the 1984 Arkie Awards.
  • Sold as "rare" in 1986. By spring 1986 the 2600 market had moved on far enough that Computer Entertainer's mail-order list sold brand-new copies under the heading "RARE GAMES — THESE ARE YOUR SPECIAL PRICES", at $19.00 (good through 10 May 1986).

Before you buy

Low risk; no reproductions are documented and loose copies are inexpensive. If you play on the Atari 2600+, note that Super Cobra is one of the few cartridges reported not to work on it, at least at the console's launch, so plan to play it on original hardware unless you have confirmed it works on your firmware. Make sure the listing is the 2600 cartridge, since Parker Brothers also released it for several other consoles.
