About Super Cross Force

There’s a new menace in the galaxy! It’s the evil Morplus from the planet Tzoris. Morplus are without question the fiercest warriors east of the Libra Super-Galactic Cluster. They arrive in teams of two to four members, and in waves with the more dangerous squadrons arriving later. In the more advanced skill levels, they’re impossible to stop! Both their flight patterns and bombing maneuvers are highly unpredictable. What can you do against odds like these? There’s only one hope: you must catch them in a devastating super cross force. The key is your awesome "Spectron" weapon, which creates a dual holographic laser blast. You can get them coming and going, and if you run low on energy, you can deftly swing your joystick to the left or right to catch the energy packs dropped by your mother ship.

Computer Entertainer's pick of Spectravideo's three ColecoVision-compatible games: a good-looking, well-playing space shooter.

Spectravideo published Super Cross Force in 1983, and it started on computers. In Computer Entertainer (volume 2, number 11) the reviewer called it an attractively drawn space game with good play action and the best of Spectravideo's three ColecoVision-compatible games.

You steer a pair of Spectron Lasers that slide along the top or bottom edge of the screen, with both lasers moved at once by one joystick in the solo and alternating two-player modes. The background is a single black field with a few colorful planets, the same at every skill level.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 2 No. 11February 1984Graphics ★★★ · Play-Action ★★★

“SUPER CROSS FORCE is not outstandingly innovative, but it is good gaming fun for those who delight in destroying aliens.”

— Computer Entertainer, February 1984

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.

Worth knowing

  • From the ColecoVision manual. A dual-controlled mode lets two players run the paired lasers independently, each with their own joystick.
  • From the ColecoVision manual. The title screen lists ten game modes, and each mode has nine difficulty levels.
  • From the ColecoVision manual. Your Spectron weapons run on limited fuel and need refuelling by catching an energy pack dropped from the mother ship.

Before you buy

Standard keypad controller. Spectravideo billed its carts as ColecoVision-compatible, so make sure the cartridge and label are the ColecoVision edition. Loose carts are cheap and a boxed copy adds a modest premium.
