About Super Kick-Off
Super Kick Off is a football game for the Sega Mega Drive, Sega Master System and Sega Game Gear, released exclusively in Europe and Brazil. It is considered by many to be the watered-down version of Kick Off 2, previously released for the Commodore Amiga (and ported to the Amstrad CPC, Atari ST and Commodore 64). Kick Off 2 was originally programmed by Dino Dini for Anco Games, with the console adaptions being handled by Tiertex. From a franchise perspective, Super Kick Off would be followed by the controversial Kick Off 3: European Challenge. However, Dino Dini, who had no involvement in Kick Off 3 would go on to form his own company and produce the Amiga/IBM PC game Goal!, which shares similar gameplay. Goal! also arrived on the Mega Drive, in the updated form of Dino Dini's Soccer.

Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

“A totally amazing soccer game - and one of the best games ever for the Master System!”
“Complete with a stadium full of options, this is by far and away the best 8-bit version imaginable. The graphics are attractive, the scrolling fast and the superb dribbling ball control has been pretty much preserved.”
“The playability and game logic of that made the Amiga version one of the finest games ever written have been captured perfectly to create an absolutely sensational soccer game”
“The legendary Super Kick Off looks surprisingly simi¬ lar to its Amiga counterpart, and plays just as bril¬ liantly! A superb game - one of the finest available on this machine - and a must for all football fans (and anyone else for that matter).”

The Sega Genesis version
A feature-packed Mega Drive football game whose dribbling frustrated Sega Pro, and a bargain among European carts.
On the Mega Drive, Super Kick Off arrived in Europe in May 1993, built by Tiertex for U.S. Gold. It follows on from Kick Off and Kick Off 2, and the Master System, Game Boy and Super NES also had versions.
Sega Pro praised its icon screens, smooth-scrolling pitch and options such as free kicks, penalties and after-touch, but found the dribbling very frustrating because the ball does not stick to your feet and said there was still room for improvement. Italian magazine Game Power stressed the Mega Drive game's speed and ball physics.

“Overall, the football action's good. It's not quite up to the standard of its 16-bit computer brothers but easily the best on the MD.”
“This is a pretty damned OK football game. There’s a reasonable amount of control in here, and the players seem slightly more intelligent than most (in real life, that is). But there are plenty better Mega Drive footy games in the pipeline. I suggest you save your money for something else.”
“Super Kick Off's feel and playability is unrivalled by any other football game on the Megadrive at the moment. 109 £45? Seems a bit steep, isn't it?”

Before you buy
This is a European cart, and among European-only carts it sits well below the middle in price. Some modes save to a battery inside the cartridge, so check that a save holds; a replaced battery is a normal repair and not a sign of a fake.
