About Super Monaco GP
A superb Formula One racing game from Sega that took sprite-scaled graphics to a whole new level. The game's single track offered a very reasonable representation of the famous Monaco Grand Prix circuit. Players could chose to race with one of three different skill/gear settings : Beginner : Automatic Gears Intermediate : 4-Speed Manual gears Professional : 7-Speed Manual Gears Before entering the Grand Prix, a qualification lap had to be completed. In the event of qualifying, the qualifying time determined the player's position on the starting grid. During the race itself, checkpoints had to be reached within a set time, or the race was over.

Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Sega Master System version
A driving game that was praised on release even though it is not a true conversion of the arcade game.
Super Monaco GP was developed by Sega with Arc System Works and published by Sega, and the Master System version came out in North America in September 1990 and in Europe in 1990. It is not a true conversion of the arcade game.
Reception was generally favorable. Computer and Video Games considered it the best driving game available on the Master System in 1990, and Julian Rignall praised its lasting fun while noting how sensitive the steering is. Another critic called it a very competent driving game but pointed out elements missing from the arcade original.

“But that's not saying it's bad. The 3D is fast and effective 3D and it plays well too, even in a single-player mode in which you race against a field of ruthless computer-driven cars. If you're after some hard-driving thrills, forget the rest - this is the best!”
“A simultaneous split-sereen two-player mode makes for bad graphics. A poor atmosphere is created by flimsy backgrounds and unrealistic animation.”

There is a US and a European cart. The European cart is far cheaper than the US one, much more so complete. Loose, the price sits above the middle of the US-released carts, and the look-alike risk is low.

The Sega Genesis version
A fast, well-loved Sega racer whose Genesis cartridge adds a full Grand Prix mode, and a cheap pickup.
Super Monaco GP is Sega's Formula One racing game, released in Japan on 9 August 1990, with North America following in September 1990 and Europe in January 1991. This Genesis cartridge goes beyond the arcade's single course with a World Championship mode that covers all the tracks of the 1989 Formula One season.
Mean Machines Sega called it a superb conversion of the coin-op, with a full extra game racing top drivers around eighteen Grand Prix circuits, fast and effective 3D and a password system to carry a Grand Prix campaign from one session to the next.

Among US carts it sits below the middle, so it is an easy cart to buy. The European loose cart usually costs a little less than the US one, but a complete European copy usually costs more. The Japanese loose cart usually costs less, and complete Japanese copies cost about the same; its cartridge has a different shape. A Sega Classic re-release is usually the cheapest complete copy, while a Mega Hit Series re-release is usually far dearer, so check which one a listing really is. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
