A drawing tablet and cartridge sold as one unit, and one of the priciest items in the library.
Super Sketch is a graphics tablet with its software, published by Practical Peripherals in 1985 for the ColecoVision. Computer Entertainer said it opens up sketching to ColecoVision owners and offers fifteen colors, but that you cannot save what you draw.
The tablet is wired to the cartridge and does not plug into a controller port, so the pad and cartridge came as a set.
What the press said at the time
“a sketch tablet is great fun, especially since you can trace all sorts of interesting items … The only drawback is the problem of the system not being able to save your creation.”
How the ColecoVision version differs
The ColecoVision version was adapted for ColecoVision owners and lets you sketch, but you cannot save what you draw.
Worth knowing
- From the ColecoVision manual. The Save, Load and tape rewind/fast-forward functions are marked as Texas Instruments only, so the ColecoVision version cannot save pictures to tape.
- From the ColecoVision manual. The tablet's control arm and four buttons (Lift, Menu, Select and the release bar) replace the controller; the cartridge is attached to the tablet by a card.
- From the ColecoVision manual. The package is a drawing tablet, not a game: you trace or draw on paper held by clamps and the picture appears on the TV screen.
Before you buy
The pad is hard-wired to the cartridge, so a cartridge without its pad is incomplete. A full kit had the manual, a quick reference card, six drawings to trace and a warranty card, in a black box with a rainbow. The cartridge has a silver label and a sticker reading Model G2500 For Use with Colecovision. A museum list calls it very rare.
