Switchblade II on Wikipedia

Switchblade II is a 1991 side-scrolling action-platform run and gun video game originally developed and published by Gremlin Graphics in Europe for the Amiga home computers. It is the sequel to the original Switchblade, which was solely created by Simon Phipps at Core Design and released earlier in 1989 across multiple platforms. Despite being primarily developed in the UK, its graphics had a distinctly Japanese style similar to anime or manga.

A moody Amiga-lineage action-platformer, and one of the better-looking games on the system.

Optimus Software converted it and Atari published the 1992 Lynx version, ported across from the PC rather than direct from Core Design’s Amiga original. You play Hiro, last of the Blade Knights, against the villain Havoc for the fate of Cyberworld. The dark industrial art direction survives the small screen unusually well.

Contemporary reviewers split hard on it. GamePro liked it for graphics, sound and pace; Electronic Gaming Monthly was withering — “as dry as its premise makes it sound… so unbearably average that you could probably quiz any fifth-grader and get some good suggestions”. Never re-released, and its complete-in-box price runs to more than double loose.

  • Amiga. Gremlin Graphics' Switchblade series began on the Amiga and Atari ST; the Lynx cartridge is the only console appearance. EGM #39's spec box gives the Lynx version 18 levels on a 2-megabit cartridge.

Worth knowing

  • You are Operative Hiro, issued a switchblade sword and a plasma cannon. EGM #39's review reproduces the mission briefing: an enemy force has taken a territory, field support is minimal, and "we will supply you with a switchblade sword and a plasma cannon. All other weapons will be found in the field." Eighteen levels on a 2-megabit cartridge, with an in-game shop for buying equipment between areas.

Before you buy

Low risk on the cartridge. The premium is entirely in the box, so inspect print quality and inserts if you are paying for a complete copy.
