About Swordquest: Fireworld
Swordquest is an unfinished series of video games produced by Atari, Inc. in the 1980s as part of a contest, consisting of three finished games and a planned but never released fourth game. All of the games came with a comic book that explained the plot, as well as containing part of the solution to a major puzzle that had to be solved to win the contest. Fireworld was the second of the four games. Its room structure was based on the tree of life.

The second Swordquest cartridge, more interesting for the contest behind it than for the game, and on Atari 50.
Swordquest was a series of Atari 2600 action-adventure games built around a contest: three finished games, Earthworld, Fireworld and Waterworld, with a planned fourth, Airworld. Fireworld, designed by Tod Frye, was the second, released in February 1983.
Fireworld is far more common than the limited-release Waterworld, so it is the easy part of the set. It is on Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration if you only want to play it.
How it was made
Designed by Tod Frye and released by Atari in February 1983 as the second game in the Swordquest series.
What the press said at the time
| Electronic Fun with Computers & Games Vol. 1 No. 1 | November 1982 | 4 joysticks |
| Computer Entertainer Vol. 2 No. 1 | April 1983 | Graphics ★★½ · Play-Action ★★★½ |
“Of course, these games are not for everyone. You have to be into the "thinking" games to enjoy this series. Chances are, if you liked Adventure and Haunted House, you'll love EarthWorld and FireWorld.”
“With the exception of this criticism, we thoroughly enjoyed the game. It is challenging in the extreme, but even the overly bright scenes can be mastered. The puzzles are many and should lead to many hours of mentally stimulating adventuring.”
“But Fireworld never quite makes it as either a strategic adventure game or a more-traditional action-packed video en- counter.”
Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — stars in most years, diamonds in 1986–87 — comparing each game only with other games for the same system. Electronic Fun rated games out of four joysticks.

Before you buy
Low risk. Loose carts are inexpensive, and boxed copies are easy to find. If you are buying complete, check what the box should contain against a reference for this title before paying a complete-copy price. The title sometimes appears as FireWorld, with a capital W, on labels and boxes; that is normal.
