Swords & Serpents on Wikipedia
Swords and Serpents is a 1990 fantasy role-playing video game developed by Interplay Productions and published by Acclaim Entertainment for the Nintendo Entertainment System. In this game, the player controls a party of four adventurers on a dungeon-crawling quest to destroy a terrible serpent. Along the way, the party encounters an onslaught of fantasy monsters and collects gold and treasure while gaining experience points needed to raise their individual attributes, as well as purchasing equipment from shops within the dungeon. Swords and Serpents focuses mainly on gameplay and contains very little plot development.

A real fantasy adventure that needs a second player to finish, and well liked at the time.
Imagic's Swords and Serpents has a Warrior Prince searching four levels of the Fortress of the Sinister Serpent. Computer Entertainer called it a must for Intellivision owners who wanted a true fantasy adventure, and noted that it can be played cooperatively by two people.
Electronic Fun in mid-1983 went further: the one- and two-player games differ, and you cannot reach the Serpent's Lair on the fourth floor without a second player. A solo player can still have a lot of fun in the halls.
How it was made
Published by Imagic for the Intellivision in 1982.
What the press said at the time
| Computer Entertainer Vol. 1 No. 12 | March 1983 | Graphics ★★★★ · Play-Action ★★★★ |
| Electronic Fun with Computers & Games Vol. 1 No. 9 | July 1983 | 3 joysticks (of 4) |
| JoyStik Vol. 2 No. 1 | September 1983 | ★★★★★ |
“This long-awaited game fulfills every promise of its advance billing, and then some—we were totally enchanted with it.”
“No matter how good you are at video games and no matter how much you study the rule book, you’re going to need help to beat this adventure game.”
“Complicated and difficult, this game is fascinating nonetheless. The sound of footsteps follow the prince and his companion around the castle's four levels and the graphics are colorful.”
“All awards are the sole discretion of THE VIDEO GAME UPDATE and are based on creativity, imagination, sales, and our reader's imput. ... GAME OF THE YEAR—INTELLIVISION: SWORDS & SERPENTS by Imagic”
Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system. Electronic Fun rated games out of four joysticks. JoyStik’s capsule ratings run from one star to five.
Worth knowing
- From the Intellivision manual. The Wizard Nilrem only appears in the two-player versions; in the one-player game the Warrior Prince goes through the Fortress alone.
- From the Intellivision manual. The Magic two-player version gives the Wizard four magic spells at the start instead of one.
- From the Intellivision manual. The Fortress has 4 levels; you collect treasures, store them in the chest on the first level for valor points, and find a key on each level.
Before you buy
Imagic shipped two keypad overlays. Boxed copies carry a clear premium over loose carts, and the manual matters because the game relies on it. Check both controllers if you want to use the cooperative mode.
