Bally Midway's bartending arcade game in a Sega-published 2600 conversion.

Tapper is a 1984 arcade game in which you serve thirsty customers before their patience runs out while collecting empty mugs and tips. The arcade original carried a Budweiser theme, and a Root Beer Tapper version followed for arcades. The 2600 conversion was developed by Beck-Tech and published by Sega in October 1984.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 3 No. 8November 1984Graphics ★★½ · Play-Action ★★★

“The game is cute and colorful, with graphics about average for this system. It plays much like the coin-op game, making you laugh while you keep yourself busy slinging mugs and fielding empties. It's a good adaptation of the arcade game that the whole family can enjoy.”

— Computer Entertainer, November 1984

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — stars in most years, diamonds in 1986–87 — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.

  • ZX Spectrum. The ZX Spectrum and Amstrad CPC versions carried the Pepsi logo while keeping the original bartender rather than the Root Beer Tapper soda jerk.
  • Commodore 64. Compute!'s Gazette called the Commodore 64 version one of the most addictive games it had seen and rated it near the top in entertainment value.

Before you buy

Medium risk. No fakes are documented. Compare the Sega label and shell against AtariAge's scans and ask for a working test. Sealed copies cost many times the loose price, so a sealed purchase is a packaging purchase; get it graded.
