About Target Earth
Target Earth is a space shooting game set in the future with Earth under attack by robots. The protagonist of the game is a pilot of a mech robot which can either walk on planet surfaces or fly in space. There are two types of levels in the game. Surface levels take place on planets or moons and allow the mech to run and jump to the end of the level while fighting enemies, as in a side scrolling game. Space levels have no gravity and allow the mech to move in any direction. The mech can be equipped with a large assortment of machine guns, lasers, and grenades.

The Genesis robot shooter that began the Assault Suit series, with a Japanese cart that costs more.
Target Earth is a run-and-gun game developed by NCS and published by Masaya, with DreamWorks as publisher in North America. It came out in Japan in March 1990 as Assault Suit Leynos and in North America in May 1990. It is the first game in the Assault Suits series.
Sega Pro, reviewing the Japanese import, found it not much fun, with a few neat cheats.

“Overall, it’s a disappointing effort—one that will only appeal to starved “shooter” addicts.”
“It’s very tough, but this is more down to a frustrating control method than a well-designed, large challenge. … Tough, but for all the wrong reasons.”
Undated scores are from the review table in the game's Wikipedia article, limited to reviews of the Genesis version.
Before you buy
Among US carts it sits above the median. The Japanese cart (Assault Suit Leynos) usually costs much more than the US one and has a different cartridge shape from a Western console's slot. It is a cheap-tier game with no per-game fake concerns. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
