Atari 2600 prices, all games & how to spot a fake

A cheap Looney Tunes cartridge in North America, and a pricier collectible in Europe as Asterix.

Steve Woita designed Taz for Atari, Inc., released in April 1984. The Tasmanian Devil is on a food frenzy, though on screen he appears only as a spinning tornado.

Europe got the same game as Asterix, with the Gaulish hero in place of Taz. The North American cartridge is common; the PAL Asterix release is the one collectors pay more for.

How it was made

Designed by Steve Woita at Atari, Inc. and released in April 1984; the European release was retitled Asterix.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 2 No. 11February 1984Graphics ★★★ · Play-Action ★★½

“The graphics in TAZ are cute and colorful. … However, we just couldn't become really excited about TAZ. It's fun to play, but not particularly outstanding.”

— Computer Entertainer, February 1984

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — stars in most years, diamonds in 1986–87 — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.

Before you buy

Check which version you are looking at. Taz is the common North American cartridge. Asterix is the PAL release of the same game and sells for noticeably more. A modern homebrew cartridge has also used the Asterix name, so make sure a listing is the 1984 PAL release. Asterix is a PAL cart, so on an NTSC console and TV it will usually show wrong colors and may roll. No fakes are documented.
