About Taz-Mania

A video game adaptation of the Taz-Mania cartoon, starring the Tasmanian Devil. One of several games based on the license, the Sega versions features the same story, but has a unique design and set of levels in the different platforms. Inspired by a tale his father told, Taz goes on a quest for the egg of a giant prehistoric seabird, which will lead him across the whole of Taz-Mania through 16 levels of platforming action. He must survive a desert, a jungle, a car factory, a mine and ancient ruins. Taz is able to run, jump, and spin fast to turn into his trademark whirlwind. While spinning, he can knock out most enemies he comes across. He can also pick up many different items and try to eat them or use them in another way. Most foods replenish his health, while eating hot peppers gives him a fire breath attack. Stars grant temporal invulnerability, while bombs should be thrown at enemies (and definitely not be eaten!).

A cartoon-perfect Sega platformer with fine graphics and humor that is a little too easy, and a cheap cart.

This is the Genesis / Mega Drive Taz-Mania, a side-scrolling platform game based on the cartoon series, developed by Recreational Brainware and published by Sega. It came out in North America and Europe in July 1992 and in Japan on 25 December 1992. The Game Gear and Master System versions are different games.

Mean Machines Sega called it a brilliant interpretation of the character with some of the best graphics seen on the Mega Drive, spoiled only by its lack of difficulty. Sega Force said the cartoon hero had been captured beautifully, with the cartoon graphics and humor making the game, though it too thought it a touch easy. The Mega Drive version was reportedly a UK bestseller for two months.

“The only flaw with Taz Mania is that it’s a mite too easy. … Taz Mania is a very good game with fantastic graphics and some really smart gameplay”

— Mean Machines, June 1992

“Taz-Mania plays like a dream and looks absolutely stunning. These are the best cartoon graphics I’ve seen on the Mega Drive.”

— Sega Force, July 1992

“A major thumbs up to Sega (and Warner Brothers) for a job well done.”

— GamePro, August 1992

“Taz Mania has stunning graphics, great sound but falls just short of becoming a classic by being a little too easy to complete.”

— MegaTech, October 1992

How the Sega Genesis version differs

The other Taz-Mania games on Game Gear and Master System are different games, as are the Super NES and Game Boy ones, so the Genesis game is not a port of them.

A sprite-based tool Sloane called the compositor let Taz have a large number of facial expressions.

Before you buy

Among US carts a loose copy sits below the middle, so it is easy to buy cheaply. A loose European cart usually costs a little more than the US one, while a complete European copy usually costs about the same. The Japanese cart usually costs noticeably more and has a different cartridge shape, which fits a Western console only with an adapter or after removing two plastic tabs in its slot.
