About Teddy Boy

In Teddy Boy you must scramble from maze to maze - each more magnificent than the one before it - bumping off bugs, guppies, snails, dominos and more as you go. Grab precious points for tennis shoes, teddy bears, snails, and other identifiable objects. And try to avoid the ugly Den Den, a snapping dragon head. Or you'll be forced to wake up to reality.

An early Sega arcade port that came on a Sega Card and is cheap in Europe.

Teddy Boy is a 1985 Sega arcade game in which a boy with a gun clears mazes of dice, shooting monsters that hatch out. Its console version was a launch title for the Mark III, released in Japan on October 20, 1985, as Teddy Boy Blues. The Master System version reached North America in September 1986, Europe in November 1987 and Brazil from Tec Toy in 1991. The version released outside Japan has different background music and removes the references to Ishino, and the player can shoot colored dice to reveal prizes in the bonus rounds.

What the press said at the time

“This was never the most outstanding Sega release, but now it's doing the rounds with a price tag of a tenner, it's not such a bad buy. The graphics are cute, and the gameplay, while not fiendishly excit¬ ing, is decent enough fun for a fair few hours. A nice little potboiler.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

How the Sega Master System version differs

The Brazilian Tec Toy release is titled Geraldinho and replaces the hero with Geraldinho, from a comic strip by Brazilian cartoonist Glauco. It also starts you with five lives instead of three.

Also on other platforms

Arcade · Genesis · Sega CD

  • Genesis. The Genesis version was released online on the Sega Meganet service in Japan.
  • Arcade. The arcade game has 50 distinct levels, called rounds, though the round counter goes to 99.

Before you buy

Teddy Boy came on a Sega Card, which plugs into the card slot of the original Master System or Mark III, and the Master System II has no such slot. There are US, European, Japanese and Brazilian releases. The European copy is much cheaper than the US one, loose and complete. The Japanese cart costs more and is a different, smaller shape that needs an adapter on a Western console. Loose, the price sits above the middle of the US-released carts and the look-alike risk is low.
