About Tennis

Tennis offers singles matches for one or two players; one player is colored pink, the other blue. The game has two user-selectable speed levels. When serving and returning shots, the tennis players automatically swing forehand or backhand as the situation demands, and all shots automatically clear the net and land in bounds. The first player to win one six-game set is declared the winner of the match (if the set ends in a 6-6 tie, the set restarts from 0-0). This differs from professional tennis, in which player must win at least two out of three six-game sets.

Alan Miller's early Activision tennis game, simple and cheap.

Tennis is a sports game written by Activision co-founder Alan Miller and published by Activision in 1981. It supports one or two players.

It comes from Activision's first year, before Miller's Starmaster, and it is an easy pickup for anyone collecting the company's early catalog.

How it was made

Written by Alan Miller and released by Activision in March 1981, with a PAL release later that year.

What the press said at the time

“This cartridge proves once again that a game doesn't have to be complicated to be enjoyable.”

— Electronic Games, December 1981

“This is one of the few really good sports games for the Atari VCS.”

— VIDEO (Arcade Alley), November 1982

“strength for the VCS, but this clever net cartridge is one of a handful of happy exceptions.”

— Electronic Games, December 1982

“Al Miller's sports simulations are about as good as they get on the 2600, with the Arkie-winning Tennis a perfect example.”

— Electronic Games, June 1983

Worth knowing

  • 1982 Arkie Award. Tennis won Best Competitive Game in the 1982 Arkie Awards, "designed by Al Miller". It also took an honorable mention for Best Sports Game.

Before you buy

Low risk; early Activision carts were made in quantity and are not reproduction targets. Loose carts are inexpensive, and boxed copies cost a few times as much. Check box condition before paying for a complete copy.
