About The Amazing Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin

Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin is a video game produced by Sega of America and developed by Technopop initially on the Mega Drive/Genesis. It was ported internally by Sega of America for the Master System and Game Gear consoles, the latter being published by Acclaim Entertainment through its Flying Edge division. An updated version was also released for the Sega CD under the name of The Amazing Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin. All versions of the video game are side-scrolling platform games, whereby the player controls superhero Spider-Man to battle various supervillains (Doctor Octopus, Sandman, The Lizard, Hobgoblin, Vulture, Mysterio, Electro, and Venom) to obtain the keys needed to disarm a nuclear bomb that the Kingpin has not only framed Spider-Man for stealing but plans to detonate within twenty-four hours. In the middle of the game, Spider-Man's wife Mary Jane Watson is also kidnapped by Venom.

The cheapest way to own it loose is the Sega Genesis version ($14).

Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Sega Master System version

A Sega port of the Genesis game, and a cart where the box matters more than usual.

Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin was developed by Sega, ported from the Genesis game made by Technopop and Recreational Brainware, and released in North America in August 1991 and in Europe in October 1991. Paul Hutchinson is credited with the programming and the music of the Master System version.

Like other Master System games released in the United States in 1991, the US copies are European imports: no US boxes or manuals were produced.

Two releases exist, the US cart and the European cart. The European cart costs much less than the US one, loose and complete. Because US copies were sold in European boxes with a UPC sticker over the European barcode, look for that sticker before paying the US price. The US cart sits above the middle of the US-released carts on price. Check the manual is there on a complete copy.

The Sega Genesis version

Sega's original Genesis Spider-Man, which brought a roster of classic Marvel villains to the cartridge.

This is the original Genesis game, Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin, made by Technopop and Recreational Brainware and published by Sega. The Master System and Game Gear versions are ports of it, and the Sega CD version, retitled The Amazing Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin, is an expanded release of it. Kingpin has framed Spider-Man for stealing a nuclear bomb set to go off within 24 hours, and you fight through villains including Doctor Octopus, the Lizard, Electro, Sandman and Venom to gather the keys that disarm it.

Video Games & Computer Entertainment covered it in September 1991 as the game that finally brought Marvel's best-known hero to the Genesis in a big way, and praised its attention to detail and the roster of classic villains.

What the press said at the time

“Simply put, Sega’s Spider-Man is a visual feast and a challenging delight!”

— GamePro, August 1991

How the Sega Genesis version differs

The Genesis game was the original and a huge commercial success; its developer later claimed two-thirds of Genesis owners at the time also bought it.

Development was troubled: the game was first contracted to Innerprise Software, then Technopop, whose contract was also cancelled, leaving Burt Sloane to finish it with college friends as Recreational Brainware.

It came out on cartridge in North America in August 1991, but the price shown on this page is for the Japanese cart, so judge a US copy's price from its own recent sales. A Japanese Mega Drive cart is a different shape from a Western one and fits a Western console only with an adapter or after removing two plastic tabs in its slot.

The Sega CD version

Sega's own updated take on its Genesis Spider-Man, with an extra level that makes it the fuller version.

This is the Sega CD version, an updated release of the Genesis game retitled The Amazing Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin. Sega developed it, and it made several improvements to take advantage of the CD's extra memory, including an additional Mysterio's FunHouse level. It came out in North America in 1993 and in Europe in November 1993.

How it was made

Sega developed the Sega CD version.

“Basically, this is a two year old cartridge game on a CD. … this Mega-CD conversion is definitely worthy of purchase. It's about as good a Spiderman game as you could ever hope for!”

— MegaTech, December 1993

“Basically the same formula as the Spiderman cart game, but with a big 50 levels and more moves for Spidey himself. Plus a Q-Surround soundtrack and loads of animated cartoon intermissions.”

— MegaTech, February 1994

“Nothing the MD couldnl do much, much better. Doesnl use any of the Mega-CD’s reál capabilities.”

Before you buy

Among North American Sega CD games the US disc sits above the middle on price. The European disc usually costs much more loose and noticeably more complete, and it suits a European Mega-CD. Ask for photos of the disc's printed side, its data side and the inner ring, and check that the title and catalogue number match the case.
