A Master System-only Shinobi sequel that critics found disappointing next to the original, but a fair pickup for Shinobi completists.
The Cyber Shinobi, also known as Shinobi Part 2, was developed and published by Sega for the Master System and released in Europe in April 1991. It is a futuristic sequel to the Master System Shinobi and counts as the third Shinobi game on the console, including Alex Kidd in Shinobi World.
Mean Machines' Richard Leadbetter compared it unfavorably to the Master System version of the original Shinobi.
How it was made
Ryo Kudou is credited as designer, with music by Keisuke Tsukahara and Sheriko Dama.
What the press said at the time
| Computer + Video Games Issue 114 | May 1991 | OVERALL 46% |
| Mean Machines | 58% | |
| Sega Pro | 68/100 |
“This is ac¬ tually inferior to its prequel and though the graphics might look fine in a static state, they move jerkily.”
Undated scores are from the review table in the game's Wikipedia article, limited to reviews of the Sega Master System version.
Before you buy
The European cart is the one to look for, and its loose price is about the middle of the European-only games. A complete copy costs noticeably more than a loose one, so check the manual is in the box.
