A basic Genesis driving game that is among the cheapest US carts.

The Duel: Test Drive II is the Genesis version of Accolade's racing game, developed by Distinctive Software and published under the Ballistic name. It came out in North America in March 1992 and in Europe on 25 March 1992.

What the press said at the time

Mean Machines Sega Issue 3December 199257%
Mega Action Issue 2July 199384%

“The Duel is extremely faithful to its PC origins. However, its graphics and sound are rather simplistic compared to some of the other racing titles available for the Genesis.”

— GamePro, June 1992

“ll:THE DUEL An accurate simulation of driving three of the fastest sports cars in the world has loads of potential. Unfortunately, this game flushes it down the toilet with its combination of crappy graphics, nauseating sound, ropey collision detection and awkward con trols.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“Climb aboard something demonically fast and race your heart out through the wastelands of America. The computer throws some pretty daring adversaries at you, and that can't be bad!”

— Mega Action, July 1993

How the Sega Genesis version differs

The console versions, including the Genesis one, offer four separate courses of varying difficulty on public highways, instead of the single course of the computer versions.

Also on other platforms

Amiga · Amstrad CPC · Apple IIGS · Commodore 64 · Mac · MS-DOS · MSX · ZX Spectrum · Atari ST · Super NES

  • Amiga. The computer versions, such as the Amiga one, have a single course called Master Scenery made up of several stages set in desert, mountain and grassy areas.
  • Super NES. Electronic Games called the Super NES game an excellent addition to that system's library and a mark of Accolade's Ballistic label as a top 16-bit producer.

Before you buy

Among US carts it is one of the cheapest. The European loose cart usually costs much more than the US one and a complete European copy somewhat more, so the US cart is the cheaper copy to buy. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
