A sprawling, rough-edged action role-playing game that was a computer hit first and costs little on the Genesis.

This is the Genesis version of The Faery Tale Adventure, an action role-playing game that David Joiner designed for the Amiga in 1987. New World Computing, which had acquired MicroIllusions, ported it to the Genesis and Electronic Arts published it, in July 1991 in both North America and Europe.

Video Games & Computer Entertainment, reviewing it in August 1991, counted among its weaknesses a save system that needs a password of 36 characters, and guessed that a battery backup would have raised the retail price.

What the press said at the time

“A dull role-playing game which lacks action and … atmosphere. There are plenty of better games of this type,”

“A dull role-playing game which lacks action and atmosphere. There are plenty of better games of this type, so look elsewhere.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“One of EA’s lesser moments, an RPG that starts off dull and well - carries on being dull for far longer than is strictly necessary. … If RPGs are your bag, then check out the Shining’ twins.”

— Mega, July 1993

How the Sega Genesis version differs

Computer Gaming World said the Genesis version subtly improved on the Amiga original, for example with a better teleportation system, while keeping its excellent graphics.

Video Games & Computer Entertainment noted that a battery backup would probably have raised the cartridge's retail price, and complained about the very long character string the game uses instead.

  • Amiga. The original Amiga 1000 version featured the largest game world to that date and ran with two screens, a lowres 320 and a hires 640 pixels wide, allowing 64 + 16 colors.
  • Commodore 64. The Commodore 64 and MS-DOS ports had graphics of substantially lower quality than the Amiga original because of hardware limitations.

Among US carts it sits below the middle. The European loose cart usually costs about the same as the US one, while a complete European copy usually costs much more. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
