A good-looking Winter Olympics sports game whose sluggish controls spoil several events, and a cheap cart.
This is the Genesis / Mega Drive version of Winter Challenge, developed by MindSpan and published by Ballistic in North America in January 1992 and by Accolade in the PAL territories in 1992. It portrays eight winter sports events and is not licensed by any Olympic body. It began on MS-DOS, where it was called The Games: Winter Challenge.
Sega Pro praised the graphics as some of the best on the Mega Drive but found the controls sluggish and frustrating, and said only the ski jump and slalom were worth replaying. Sega Force enjoyed it in tournament mode with up to ten players taking turns.

“With all the different games available for Genesis, it’s surprising that there aren’t many that give you the variety in one cart as Winter Challenge.”
“Admittedly, the graphics are some of the best on the Mega Drive, but iťs when you start to play Winter Challenge that things really become difficult.”
“Some extremely awful music, but there's great sampled effects. … A great multi-event, ice-based extravaganza, highly recommended to sports fans.”
“GAMESsWINTER CHAL LENGE Participate in eight Olympic events (speed skating, downhill, luge, cross country, bobsled, biathlon, giant slalom and ski jump) in this fine winter sports fest. The graphics are a bit patchy, but overall this is a fine game that's highly recommended to sports fans.”

How the Sega Genesis version differs
The Genesis version came out in Europe in 1991 and the United States in 1992 under the shortened title Winter Challenge; the original MS-DOS game was called The Games: Winter Challenge.
Sega Pro said the Mega Drive game had some of the best graphics on the system, but found the sluggish controls frustrating.
The Mega Drive game saves high scores to the cartridge and has action replays and a useful password feature.

Before you buy
Among US carts a loose copy is one of the cheaper ones. A loose European cart usually costs a little less than the US one, while a complete European copy usually costs about the same. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
