A turn-based strategy game praised in Japan, and a dear Japan-only cart.
The Hybrid Front is a turn-based strategy game made by Sega, Oniro and H.I.C., released only in Japan, on 22 July 1994. Units can be placed by hand or automatically by pressing Start. An editor for the Japanese book Mega Drive Encyclopedia called it a masterpiece of strategy simulation, praising its epic storyline.
What the press said at the time
| Beep! MegaDrive | 6.75/10 | |
| Famitsu | 7/10, 6/10, 6/10, 6/10 | |
| Mega Force | 59% |
Undated scores are from the review table in the game's Wikipedia article, limited to reviews of the Genesis version.
Before you buy
Among Japan-only carts this is on the dear side, well above the middle, and it is valuable enough to check carefully. Ask for a photo of the board. A Japanese Mega Drive cart has a notch on the left and ridged edges, and its cartridge is a different shape from a Western Genesis cart and fits a Western console only with an adapter or after removing two plastic tabs in the slot. The cartridge saves to a battery inside it, so check that a save holds; a replaced battery is a normal repair, not a sign of a fake.
