A short but sweet overhead rally racer that filled a gap in the early library.

Alpha Denshi developed Thrash Rally, an overhead racer. GameFan's June 1993 review noted that the Neo Geo had lacked good driving games and that SNK had not tried a first-person racer since the weak Riding Hero, but called this top-down road rally through Europe short and sweet. You choose a vehicle and run the five-stage Paris-to-Dakar rally.

The Japanese AES cart came out in December 1991, a month and a half after the arcade release, and a Neo Geo CD version in 1994. ADK followed it with the spiritual successor Over Top in 1996.

How it was made

Developed by Alpha Denshi and published by SNK.

What the press said at the time

“The graphics are excellent with many highly detailed characters lining the tracks and great use of the Geo’s color palette. There is also a nice full-screen scaling effect when you go over ramps and the sound effects are up to usual Geo quality.”

— GameFan, June 1993

Before you buy

Sold in Japan and the US, and the US cart sells for more than the Japanese one loose; a complete copy costs about the same either way. It is a modest-priced cart, so conversion risk is low to moderate: a look at the board photos is sensible but not essential. A complete copy has the hard plastic case, artwork and manual. The arcade version is cheaply playable on modern consoles through ACA NeoGeo.
