About Touchdown Football

It's fourth and long with less than a minute remaining in the game. The winner gets a wild card berth in the playoffs. You're down by a field goal. Your quarterback makes a perfect pass, your receiver is wide open, and then you see the referee's arms fly up signaling the touchdown. You're going to the playoffs.

A long-delayed football cart for the 7800, cheap today and best treated as a modest period piece.

Imagineering developed Touchdown Football and Atari Corporation published it. It was announced for the first group of 7800 "super games" in 1986 and 1987, then slipped. In 1987 Computer Entertainer reported it delayed to possibly after Christmas, and the library dates it to 1989. It supports one or two players.

No period review of this cartridge turned up, and little is documented about how it plays.

Worth knowing

  • From the 7800 manual. Modes: player vs. player, player vs. computer, or computer vs. computer.
  • From the 7800 manual. Nine offensive and nine defensive formations.

Before you buy

Common and inexpensive. Pro-Line joystick, with a second stick needed for two players. Atari color label, catalog number CX7823. No documented counterfeits.
