About Toughman Contest

Toughman Contest is a game based on the world famous boxing competition of the same name. You pick one of 24 fighters, compete in one of 5 locations from around the world, and re-create the Toughman tournament as seen on TV. The boxing action is viewed from behind the back of fighter you control. Your fighter is rendered as an outline, so you can see what your opponent is up to and react accordingly. Toughman matches consist of three one minute rounds. Your goal is to KO your opponent by causing their stamina meter to decrease to the point where they fall down, or beating on them enough that you are scored the winner at end of the third round.

The cheapest way to own it loose is the Sega Genesis version ($7).

Also released on: Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. We haven’t priced or authenticated that version yet.

Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Sega Genesis version

An EA boxing game with a humorous streak that critics split on, and an inexpensive US cart.

Toughman Contest is a boxing game from EA Sports, made by Visual Concepts and High Score Productions. It came out in North America and Europe in March 1995. It is based on the Toughman Contest and puts Eric Butterbean Esch on the cover and as the final boss. A separate 32X version exists.

GamePro gave the Genesis version a rave review for its clean, well-animated graphics, funny background animations, surprising special moves and enjoyable two-player mode. Next Generation was cooler, finding the fights too short and the graphics one-dimensional and fuzzy.

What the press said at the time

Computer and Video Games Issue 161April 1995Graphics 80, Sound 70, Playability 66, Value 74

“It is this, and the fact that this is one of the toughest fighting games In any arena, which drags this game down a lot further than It really deserves to be.”

— Computer and Video Games, April 1995

“This is a boxing game and a bad one at that. First off, the special punches are really slow for your character”

— Game Informer, April 1995

How the Sega Genesis version differs

Electronic Gaming Monthly's two sports reviewers each gave the Genesis game 8 out of 10, and judged it better than Super Punch-Out!! for replay value and stronger AI.

The Genesis game has humorous background animations that the 32X version removes.

The Sega 32X version

The same EA boxing game as the Genesis one with better colors, which is why critics shrugged.

This is the 32X version of Toughman Contest, made by High Score Productions and Visual Concepts for EA Sports. Game Informer found it almost identical to the Genesis game: more colors, a crisper look and newly honed AI, but the same moves and controls. It added that EA even shipped it with the Genesis manual. The Genesis game's humorous background animations were dropped.

GameFan was harder on it, saying the boxer is drawn as a solid outline and that it did not match Super Punch-Out for fun.

How it was made

High Score Productions and Visual Concepts developed it, and EA Sports published it. Mean Machines Sega previewed the 32X version as using all 256 colors for the fighters, with new backdrops and improved sound.

What the press said at the time

“Toughman Boxing is working its way up to the heavyweight division and delivering the knock-out punch that gamers have come to expect from EA Sports.”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, June 1995

“Sure the 32X version has more colors, a crisper look and newly honed Al, but it is the same game.”

— Game Informer, June 1995

“If you own a 32X, you’ll probably want this version over the Genesis version. They sell for the same price, so why not? Still, Genesis owners who don’t have a 32X aren't missing much.”

— GamePro, June 1995

“If you own a 32X, you’ll probably want this version over the Mega Drive version. They sell for the same price, so why not?”

— GamePro, July 1995

Among US 32X games the cartridge's loose price sits below the middle, and it is an inexpensive pickup. The European copy usually costs about double the US one loose and somewhat more complete. The US one is the better deal.
