About Tower of Doom
Tower of Doom is a single-player, Dungeons & Dragons-inspired title created exclusively for the Intellivision. Choose from 10 different character classes, each with its own strengths. 7 different quests are available for play, with the harder quests featuring randomized maps and magic item effects. After choosing the quest to embark on, players will then control their character using a top-down view of the section of the dungeon they are in, the corridors and rooms being drawn on-screen as they explore them. Also to the player's disposal is a display of the character's inventory which can be utilized at any time, and an on-screen map of the entire dungeon. Encountering a creature will initiate a battle screen at which time players can fight the creature or attempt to bribe it with items they have discovered. Magic items and traps can also be found in the dungeon, each having unique effects on the player.

A Mattel fantasy RPG finished by INTV three years after Mattel closed.
Daniel Bass programmed Tower of Doom as an Advanced Dungeons & Dragons cartridge, Tower of Mystery, at Mattel, but the game play and strategy were incomplete when Mattel Electronics closed in 1984. John Tomlinson prepared it for INTV's 1987 release. Computer Entertainer's preview of INTV's 1987 lineup billed it as the most complex fantasy role-playing game done for the system, at 240K, and the magazine later reviewed the cartridge.
It is the one INTV release most worth owning for the story.
How it was made
Programmed by Daniel Bass at Mattel as Tower of Mystery; John Tomlinson readied it for INTV Corporation's March 1987 release, with Realtime Associates credited.
What the press said at the time
| Computer Entertainer Vol. 6 No. 1 | April 1987 | Graphics ★★★ · Play-Action ★★★★ |
“We were very pleased to find the depth of gameplay that is in this game.”
Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.
Before you buy
INTV Corporation shipped no overlays. It is pricier than most INTV releases, and the box and manual carry much of a complete copy's value, with sealed copies commanding a large premium.
