U.S. Games' licensed firefighting game based on the 1974 film, cheap and a fair novelty buy.
Towering Inferno is a 1982 action game published by U.S. Games for the 2600, based on the 1974 film. You play a firefighter working through a burning skyscraper to rescue victims and put out fires. Quaker Oats, U.S. Games' parent company, licensed the film rights from 20th Century-Fox.
Jeff Corsiglia designed it and Paul Allen Newell programmed it. Newell also programmed the Vectrex port of Scramble and co-designed the maze algorithm behind the 2600 game Entombed. In PAL regions, Carrere released it in 1984 as Infernal Tower.
How it was made
Designed by Jeff Corsiglia and programmed by Paul Allen Newell, developed by Western Technologies and published by U.S. Games in October 1982. Carrere published it in PAL regions as Infernal Tower in 1984.
What the press said at the time
“An above-average, enjoyable cartridge, "Towering Inferno" is a refreshing change from shoot-shoot-shoot.”
“Towering Inferno, even apart from its low violence quotient, offers plenty of solid arcading. It's fast, exciting and different enough from the typical cartridge to be of interest to VCS owners. It's a well-done, enjoyable contest.”
“A fine adaptation on one of the most disastrous of the many disaster theme films. Towering Inferno is, quite frankly, a very noisy game. But after turning down the volume on our television set, we found it to be a hot game for the price.”

Worth knowing
- 1983 Arkie Award. Electronic Games listed the VCS Towering Inferno among the honorable mentions in its 1983 Arkie Awards.
Before you buy
Low risk, with no documented reproductions. Loose carts are inexpensive. The PAL release is titled Infernal Tower, so if you want a specific region, check the label name and the publisher before buying. PAL carts give a rolling picture and odd colors on NTSC equipment.
