About Truckin'
Get behind the wheel of a big rig and drive down the Interstate Highway system. Haul cargos to and from the cities of your choosing using your trusty road map. The player also has to watch out for Smokey or he will end up with a nifty speeding ticket. Deliver the cargo safely and it's on to the next job in Truckin'. The screen is split in to halves, and a rear-mirror is featured. Players need to avoid incoming trucks and carefully plan the routes, even by consulting a real paper map to find the correct side roads. Some of the scenery included features Texas, Kansas and New York with distinct differences in the environment.

An unusual cross-country trucking strategy game, ambitious but slow, and worth more complete than loose.
Imagic's Truckin, from 1983, has you haul loads across a map of the American highway system, for one or two players at once. Electronic Fun in July 1983 thought it fine for teaching geography, but too sedate for anyone who prefers Turbo, and said gameplay and graphics took a back seat to strategic complexity.
Computer Entertainer was warmer: it praised the clean, colorful graphics and scenic clues, noted sparse sound apart from a throaty horn, and recommended the game as a truly original title.
What the press said at the time
| Computer Entertainer Vol. 2 No. 1 | April 1983 | Graphics ★★★½ · Play-Action ★★★★ |
| Electronic Fun with Computers & Games Vol. 1 No. 9 | July 1983 | 2 joysticks (of 4) |
| Video Games Player Vol. 2 No. 2 | November 1983 | A+ |
“Graphics are clean, crisp and colorful with lots of scenic clues as you travel the nation’s highways.”
“However, gameplay and graphics seem to have taken a back seat, and though Truckin’ has as many different scenes as Turbo, they are blocky and symbolic instead of realistic.”
“In this game you do more than step on the accelerator. In fact, Truckin' is to racing games what Star Raiders is to space games.”
Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system. Electronic Fun rated games out of four joysticks. Video Games Player graded games like a report card, A+ down to C-.
Before you buy
A complete Imagic copy has two keypad overlays. The box and manual account for most of the price of a complete copy, and sealed copies sell higher still, so check the overlays and the manual before paying a boxed price.
