About USCF Chess

Game features include taking back and redoing moves, rotating the game board 180 degrees, and setting up the chess board for special moves and instances. When playing against the CPU, players can also switch sides with the computer to make a move for the CPU. If the computer takes too long to make a move, the player may force the CPU to immediately make the best move it can think of, or cause the game to make an audible tone and pause before making the move.

A Mattel chess cart that serves a niche well, but check it on an Intellivision II before you rely on it.

USCF Chess came out in November 1982 from Mattel Electronics and Teletape Inc., filed under the Strategy network and sometimes called plain Chess. It does not require two players, so it doubles as a solo game against the console. Little in the press we have reviewed sets it apart; a 1983 magazine release list simply carries it among the Mattel titles.

It is a game for the chess player already sold on the Intellivision, who wants a board on the TV, and for collectors completing the Strategy network.

How it was made

Developed by Mattel Electronics and Teletape Inc., released in November 1982.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 2 No. 1April 1983Graphics ★★★½ · Play-Action ★★★★

“Although this is the most expensive game for the Intellivision to date, it’s a worthwhile purchase if you really love chess and would like to practice against the computer.”

— Computer Entertainer, April 1983

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.

Worth knowing

  • From the Intellivision manual. The left and right controllers have different overlays and functions, so each overlay must go on the correct controller; the right controller handles retract, replay and set up.
  • From the Intellivision manual. Skill level 8 is a problem-solving mode: you set up a board position and the computer hunts for the shortest checkmate.

Before you buy

Mattel packed two keypad overlays (a left and right pair), so check both are present. Intellivision II compatibility is unsettled: one collector reports it freezes on his Intellivision II, others say it works, so test on your own console before relying on it. Complete copies sell at a clear premium over loose carts.
