About Utopia

Utopia is a game played by two players on two continents. Players must build their island nation by building farms, housing, schools, hospitals, and factories and making other improvements while also competing against another player. Players are able to sabotage the other player as well, but they must also handle maintaining a fleet of PT boats to protect their fishing fleet, building forts to prevent rebellion, and dealing with the occasional hurricane. Utopia is considered by some to be the first city-building game, and an early ancestor of the real-time strategy genre.

An early city-and-island management game that is still a strong two-player contest.

Utopia is a Mattel Electronics strategy game for one or two players, often credited as the game that spawned the construction and management simulation genre.

JoyStik rated its game play 9 out of 10 in December 1982 and called it just right for anyone convinced they could run the country better. In 1983 the magazine still listed it as a good strategy game for aspiring world leaders.

“is an original and fascinating strategy game in which you rule an island nation … For those who love cerebral games, this is a winner.”

— Computer Entertainer, September 1982

“We found Utopia to be just the strategy game for those who are convinced that they could do a better job of running the country.”

— JoyStik, December 1982

“You must also contend with merciless Pirates, as well as storms and hurricanes. A good strategy game for players of all ages.”

— JoyStik, January 1983

“Highly innovative strategy contest that might shut up the Surgeon General for a couple minutes.”

— Vidiot, February/March 1983

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system. JoyStik’s capsule ratings run from one star to five.

Before you buy

Mattel packed two keypad overlays with it, so check for both. The box and manual carry much of a complete copy's price, and a sealed copy costs noticeably more.
