A moody vampire-hunting platformer that Mean Machines loved, and one of the pricier European carts.
Master of Darkness is an action-platform game developed by SIMS and published by Sega, released in Europe in 1992. It opens in London: a psychologist believes a run of murders is the work of Count Dracula and sets out to find him, but Dracula is dead, and the killings are in fact the work of Jack the Ripper, who is trying to bring him back through human sacrifice.
Mean Machines Sega called it outstanding and easily one of the best Master System games for a long time, praising the responsive controls, the brilliant intermission screens and the attention to detail, though it admitted the game is not very original. Later issues kept recommending it to platform fans, especially those who liked Castlevania.

Worth knowing
- Hidden options screen. A reader's tip printed in Mean Machines Sega described a secret options screen: with the logo on screen, press Up and both buttons together. It reportedly offers a level select, invincibility, a sound test and extra starting credits.
Before you buy
This is a European release, so shop European listings first and be wary of one sold as American. It is a Med-tier cart priced well above the typical European game, so ask for a photo of the board and compare it with the board listed on this page. A complete copy should have its manual.
