A slow little game with a big place in history: the earliest surviving game with a named, playable female lead.

Wabbit is a 1982 action game from Apollo. You play Billie Sue, a girl who throws eggs at rabbits, the 'wabbits', invading her carrot patch. Vietnamese-American programmer Van Mai pitched the idea to Apollo and was given creative freedom to design, program and animate it herself.

It had a limited release and almost no marketing, because Apollo filed for bankruptcy soon after it came out. Reviews were mixed, praising the visuals and criticizing the slow pace and repetition. Its reputation came later: the Video Game History Foundation recognizes it as the earliest surviving video game with a named, playable female protagonist, and in 2022 researchers and the Foundation identified Mai as its developer from Apollo's bankruptcy records.

How it was made

Designed, programmed and animated by Van Mai for Apollo, released in October 1982. Her credit was established in 2022 from Apollo's bankruptcy records.
