About War Room
War Room is a action strategy game set in the Cold War conflict between the United States and Russia, which is escalating into a nuclear showdown. The player controls a satellite hovering above the USA, which are represented in a top down view. By destroying enemy satellites with his own satellite, the player has to prevent the destruction of cities in his territory and is able to score points. To keep his cities defensible, the player also has to collect supplies from those cities and distribute them accordingly. This is done by entering the cities with the satellite and collecting supplies in a action sequence. The game ends once all of the player's cities are destroyed.

Probe 2000's only ColecoVision game was a defensive strategy title that Computer Entertainer called a winner.
War Room was published by Probe 2000, the division of Odyssey and North American Philips behind the game. Computer Entertainer called it the division's first and presumably last game for the ColecoVision, and a shame because it was a winner. Electronic Games noted in 1984 that of four games Probe 2000 promised for late 1983, only War Room reached consumers, with a chip shortage blamed.
You defend American cities from attacking satellites while keeping food, machinery and raw materials going, with a radar map of the country across the top of the screen. Advertising added enemy spies and approaching missiles, and described it as a strategy game so realistic that generals might play it.
What the press said at the time
| Computer Entertainer Vol. 2 No. 8 | November 1983 | Graphics ★★★★ · Play-Action ★★★★ |
| Electronic Fun with Computers & Games Vol. 2 No. 2 | December 1983 | 3 of 4 joysticks |
“This game ranks right up there with the best available for ColecoVision (or any system) and offers the player hours of strategic fun.”
“War Room lets you have things both ways: an interesting, well-designed game that’s also a pointed comment on the whole idea of winning a nuclear war.”
“War Room is one of the most addic-tive, exhilarating games available for the ColecoVision. It takes the concept introduced in Missile Command a giant step farther, almost daring gamers to try "just one more" session.”
Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system. Electronic Fun rated games out of four joysticks.
Worth knowing
- From the ColecoVision manual. Skill level 9 is the most difficult; you pick the skill level by pressing its number on either keypad.
- From the ColecoVision manual. Every fifth attack wave is easier, giving you a chance to build up production.
- From the ColecoVision manual. A pause button on the keypad freezes the game while you plan strategy.
Before you buy
War Room is one of the keypad overlay games, so a complete copy includes the overlay, and playing without it is difficult. It needs the standard ColecoVision controller and its keypad. The ColecoVisionADAM.com museum list marks it as Rare, and a boxed copy is worth several times the loose price. Check the overlay and manual, and ask for photos of the box.
