The cheapest way to own it loose is the Sega Master System version ($13).

Also released on: Super Nintendo Entertainment System · Sega Mega Drive/Genesis · Atari ST/STE · Sega Game Gear · Amiga · Sega Master System/Mark III. We haven’t priced or authenticated those versions yet.

Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Sega Master System version

A European-only port of Core Design's computer platformer, priced about where a typical European cart sits.

This is the Master System version of Wolfchild, developed by Core Design and published by Virgin Games in Europe in September 1993. The game began on the Amiga and Atari ST in 1992 and was later released on the Super NES, Mega Drive, Sega CD and Game Gear.

The story follows biotechnology researcher Kal Morrow and his son Saul, who uses one of his father's inventions to turn himself into a wolf-like hybrid.

What the press said at the time

Sega Master Force Issue 6December 199382%
Sega Pro Issue 36September 199472%

“Overall, a good conversion with excellent visuals, but I don’t know why it’s been made so difficult.”

— Sega Master Force, October 1993

“The finál word has to be ‘average.’ Wolfchild offers very little in the way of originality and, without a difficulty select, it lacks a lasting appeal.”

— Sega Pro, October 1993

“A challenging platform adventure — most players will find it on the difficult side. … Lots of secret passageways and detailed backdrops.”

— Sega Master Force, December 1993

“A very ordinary, run-of-the-mill platformer where you shoot the bad guys and collect hearts for power. Everything about this release is average and a little dull.”

— Sega Pro, September 1994

Only the European cart exists. Loose, it sits about in the middle of the European-only carts, and the look-alike risk is low. Check the manual is there on a complete copy.

The Sega Genesis version

A plain run-and-shoot platformer with a good soundtrack, and a Genesis cart that sits well above the middle among US carts.

This is the Genesis version of Wolfchild, which began on the Amiga and Atari ST. Core Design and Krisalis Software are credited as developers and JVC Musical Industries published it, with a North American release in March 1993. You play Saul Morrow, who uses his father's invention to turn himself into a wolf-like hybrid and take on the Chimera organization. The action is seen from the side and scrolls in eight directions.

Electronic Gaming Monthly was unimpressed with the Genesis cart. It found the game overlong with repetitive gameplay that quickly turned dull, and said it matched the Sega CD version apart from the CD music.

What the press said at the time

“The adjustable challenge also ensures that beginners can step into Wolfchild’s paw prints.”

— GamePro, February 1993

Before you buy

Among US carts this one sits well above the middle, so compare several listings before paying. Beyond condition, check that the cart is the Genesis one, since the game also appeared on the Super NES, Sega CD, Master System and Game Gear. A complete copy means the case, cartridge and manual.

The Sega CD version

A plain run-and-shoot platformer that the Sega CD barely stretches, and the magazines were divided on whether that mattered.

This is the Sega CD version of Wolfchild, developed by Core Design. It came out in North America in December 1992, in Japan on 19 March 1993 and in Europe on 2 April 1993. You play Saul, who turns into a wolf-human hybrid to fight the terrorist group Chimera.

MegaTech liked the zippy main sprite and the sound and called it good fun even though it does not use the Mega-CD's scaling or rotation. Mega was harsher: it thought the disc overpriced, a dull platformer that made no use of the hardware.

What the press said at the time

MegaTech Issue 16April 199382%
Sega Force Issue 19July 199356%
Sega Pro Issue 34July 199470%

“Although Wolfchild doesn't use any of the sprite-scaling or rotation tricks that the Mega-CD is capable of, the sound and the responsive feel of the zippy main sprite help to maintain your interest. It's nothing new, but it's good fun all the same.”

— MegaTech, April 1993

“But sit down to play Wolfchild and the music's the last thing on your mind. Repetitive levels, predictable bad guys and slow-moving guardians form a yawnsome game with low lastability.”

— Sega Force, July 1993

“Quite a playable platform shoot 'em up with decent music. … Nothing really new and the pseudo- Anime graphics in the intro are a bit naff.”

— MegaTech, June 1993

“A suitable attempt at a CD platform, where as the Wolfchild you mutate between man and wolf. Nothing speciál.”

— Sega Pro, July 1994

Before you buy

The US disc is above the middle for North American Sega CD prices. The European disc usually costs less, loose and complete, and a complete Japanese copy usually costs about half as much as a complete US one. The US disc suits a North American Sega CD, the European disc a European Mega-CD and the Japanese disc a Japanese Mega-CD. Check that the disc title and case agree.
