A highly regarded blend of platforming and role-playing that is one of the better Master System games.

Sega ported Wonder Boy in Monster Land to the Master System after the arcade game. It reached Japan on January 31, 1988 as Super Wonder Boy: Monster World, North America in August 1988 and Europe in 1988. Tec Toy released it in Brazil in 1991 as Monica no Castelo do Dragao, an official Brazilian retitle.

Computer and Video Games reviewed it in June 1988 and rated it highly, and Mean Machines Sega said it was better than the first game by a long shot and would keep you at the pad for ages. IGN later called it one of the best Master System games for its balance of platforming and role-playing. A sequel, Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap, followed on the Master System in 1989.

“Wonderboy I! is a game thafll have you clamped to your pad for absolutely ages, but isn't a game that you'll complete in a hurry”

— Mean Machines, May 1992

“Better than the first installment by a long shot, Wonderboy II is a game that'll have you clamped to your pad for absolutely ages, but isn't a game that you'll complete in a hurry. Highly recommended.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“The Boy’s second outing continues the challenging gameplay. You’ve 12 levels to progress through and the action is constantly fast and the baddies furious. Buy it, play it, and you won’t regret it. Honest.”

— Sega Pro, August 1993

Before you buy

Four releases exist. The European cart is much cheaper than the US one in both conditions, while the Japanese cart costs more in both. The Japanese cart is a different, smaller shape and does not fit a Western console without an adapter. The Brazilian cart is a separate Tec Toy release with its own listing, and there is no price comparison for it. The US cart is above the typical price for its year, so for a copy at this price, ask for clear photos of the cart and its label.
