A solid, character-rich wrestling game that is cheap to pick up, though the Super NES version was the hotter of the pair.

Sculptured Software developed WWF Royal Rumble and Flying Edge and Acclaim published it. The Genesis cart came out in North America and Europe in November 1993 and in Japan on 25 March 1994. It adds the Royal Rumble match, and the Genesis roster has five exclusive wrestlers: Hulk Hogan, IRS, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan, "The Model" Rick Martel and Papa Shango.

Electronic Games named it best wrestling game in its 1994 awards, saying the Genesis cart was not quite as hot as the Super NES version but was still a superb pro wrestling simulation. Mega magazine later placed it 40th in its list of the top Mega Drive games of all time.

What the press said at the time

““Overall Royal Rumble is the best wrestling simulation yet to hit the Mega Drive. Immense fun can be had from this game as the options are very varied. A few bugs let it slightly slip, but ail in all, this is one hugely funny game.””

— Mega Power, December 1993

“In the yellow corner is WWF Royal Rumble, brand spanking new and much, much better than its predecessor.”

— Sega Magazine, January 1994

How the Sega Genesis version differs

The Genesis version came out about three months after the Super NES one, with five wrestlers exclusive to each version.

The Genesis game replaces the Super NES exclusives with Hulk Hogan, IRS, Jim Duggan, Rick Martel and Papa Shango.

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits below the middle. The European cart usually costs about the same as the US one when loose and a lot more when complete. The Japanese cart usually costs far more and has a different cartridge shape, so it needs an adapter or two plastic tabs removed from a Western console's slot. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
