About Xybots

Xybots is a sci-fi shooter with pseudo-3D environments explored from a third-person perspective. The game can be played by one or two players; the two-player mode takes place on a split screen. The hero(es) must move through a series of Gauntlet-style underground mazes, killing the bad guys and collecting health and other bonuses from flying saucers. It's designed to be played co-operatively, although bullets from one player can harm the other.

Xybots is a 1987 third-person shooter video game developed and published by Atari Games for arcades. Players control "Major Rock Hardy" and "Captain Ace Gunn", who must travel through a three-dimensional maze and battle a series of robots known as the Xybots, whose mission is to destroy all mankind. A split-screen third-person maze shooter designed for two players — and the Lynx version delivers that properly.

NuFX developed it and Atari published it in 1991, converting another Atari Games coin-op. The arcade original was built around two players sharing a split screen; over ComLynx each owner gets a full screen instead, which is arguably a better implementation than the cabinet managed.

It was one of the two titles chosen to launch a dedicated monthly Lynx review column in the Atari press in April 1992, which is a reasonable proxy for how the platform’s own audience rated it at the time. Never re-released on a Lynx collection.
