A quirky action role-playing game that mixes platforming and puzzles, and one of the pricier US carts.

On the Genesis this is Exile, a remake of the Telenet Japan role-playing game XZR II, developed by Riot. It came out in Japan on 6 December 1991, and Renovation Products published it in North America. The Genesis version removed scenes judged inappropriate, such as a burning village and instances of naked women in later areas.

Sega Pro called it a strange mixture of RPG, platform and puzzle that was intriguing, admirable and worth seeing, and Sega Force described it as an above-average RPG with slash-and-hack elements. IGN's Levi Buchanan said the translation was pretty bad but had little effect on the breadth of the adventure.

What the press said at the time

“Still, its dated look and uninvolving narrative don’t help it, compared to newer RPGs for the Genesis.”

— VideoGames & Computer Entertainment, May 1992

“RPG meets arcade action and (in this case, at least) the two don’t seem to get along very well at all. … Next!”

— Mega, July 1993

“A strange mixture of RPG, platform and puzzle, makes Exile an intriguing game to play. Admirable and well worth seeing.”

— Sega Pro, September 1994

How the Sega Genesis version differs

The Genesis version removed scenes deemed inappropriate, such as a burning village and naked women in the later areas.

A town of crucified heretics being burned alive stayed in the TurboGrafx-CD release but was cut from the Genesis version.

  • TurboGrafx-CD. At NEC's request, Working Designs changed some names in the TurboGrafx-CD version because of religious and drug-related elements, so the Christian Crusaders became the Klispin Crusaders.

Before you buy

Among US carts it is one of the pricier ones. The Japanese cart (the XZR II Kanketsu-hen release) usually costs about half as much loose and under a third as much complete, but its cartridge has a different shape and needs an adapter or two plastic tabs removed from a Western console's slot. The cartridge saves to a battery inside it, so check that a save holds; a replaced battery is a normal repair, not a sign of a fake.
