About Zaxxon

Zaxxon is a 1982 isometric shooter arcade game developed and released by Sega. The game gives the player the experience of flying a fighter craft through a fortress while shooting at enemy entities (missiles, enemy gunfire, etc.) The object of the game is to hit as many targets as possible without being shot down or running out of fuel, which can be replenished paradoxically, by blowing up fuel drums.

Coleco's 2600 take on Sega's isometric arcade shooter, a cheap reminder of how much the hardware had to give up.

Sega's 1981 arcade Zaxxon was one of the first games to use isometric projection, flying a ship through two heavily defended space fortresses to face the Zaxxon robot. It was a big arcade hit, and it went on to a long list of home systems.

Coleco published the Atari 2600 cartridge in 1983. Computer and Video Games gave the 2600 version 35%, well below the 55% it gave the ColecoVision version.

What the press said at the time

Computer and Video Games35%
Computer Entertainer Vol. 2 No. 2May 1983Graphics ★½ · Play-Action ★★

“Coleco would have been better off not attempting an Atari 2600-compatible version of this complex game if this is the best that could be done within the limitations of the system.”

— Computer Entertainer, May 1983

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — stars in most years, diamonds in 1986–87 — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.

How the Atari 2600 version differs

The 2600 version, like the Intellivision one, drops the arcade's isometric view for a third-person perspective from behind the ship.

  • ColecoVision. The ColecoVision version kept the isometric view and was Coleco's best-selling non-bundled cartridge through 1983; Video Games called it a coup for the new system.
  • Atari 8-bit. Softline called the Atari 8-bit version a superb three-dimensional computer game.

Before you buy

Low risk, with no documented reproductions. Loose carts are inexpensive and boxed copies cost a few times more, so check the box and manual if you are buying complete. Make sure the listing is the Atari 2600 cartridge and not the ColecoVision or Intellivision version, which share the name.
