Atari 5200 prices, all games & how to spot a fake

A rare late Activision cart with two box variants and very little written about it.

Dan Thompson programmed Zone Ranger for the 5200, and Activision released it in late 1984. Computer Entertainer's release schedule listed it for October 1984. Its review of a Commodore 64 version in volume 3, number 8 described that game as identical to the 5200 cartridge it reviewed in the same issue.

Little else is documented about how it plays or what critics thought of the 5200 cart.

How it was made

AtariAge credits Dan Thompson as programmer of the 5200 cartridge, published by Activision.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 3 No. 8November 1984Graphics ★★★ · Play-Action ★★

“While the graphics are quite nice with bright sparkling colors, this game is just an updated “Asteroids””

— Computer Entertainer, November 1984

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — stars in most years, diamonds in 1986–87 — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.

How the Atari 5200 version differs

Computer Entertainer said the Atari computer version of Zone Ranger is identical to the 5200 version.

Before you buy

Rated Rare. The 5200 research notes an illustrated early box and a later silver-foil box, so a box that looks different from another seller's copy is not necessarily wrong. Late Activision releases also came in 2600-style boxes, sometimes with a sticker reading for Atari 5200, and with photocopied, wrong or missing manuals. Authentication risk is low with no documented fake. Test the stick.
