A flight-model-first combat game that period critics found earnest but short on excitement, and a cheap cartridge to try today.

Aero Fighters Assault is the Nintendo 64 entry in the Aero Fighters series and the only one to move the series into 3D. Paradigm Entertainment, the studio behind Pilotwings 64, developed it as a combat flight game in which four pilots take on a world-dominating organization called Phutta Morgana. It reached North America in November 1997, and the Japanese release, titled Sonic Wings Assault, followed in March 1998.

Next Generation reviewed it in its December 1997 issue and was lukewarm. The magazine liked the game's flight model but wanted more high-intensity dogfight levels, less linearity and fewer science-fiction trappings, and concluded that if the gameplay had matched the flight model it would have been a real gem. Paradigm's own marketing manager told the magazine in July 1998 that it was a pretty good game but probably not an A+ title.

How it was made

“Flight sim fans prefer realistic control and graphics, and that’s what they'll get. But action fans should be aware that Aerofighters is no roller-coaster ride of thrills.”

— Nintendo Power, October 1997

“The action is repetitive, frame rate is a joke, and the buddy talk' makes Top Gun look like The English Patient. Avoid.”

— GameFan, November 1997

“Had the gameplay matched its flight model, Aero Fighters Assault would have been a real gem. But as it is, the game's not quite a diamond in the rough.”

— Next Generation, December 1997

“The missions are diverse and interesting, and the enemy Al is very nicely done.”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, January 1998

Next Generation rated games from one star ("Bad: crucially flawed in design or application") to five ("Revolutionary"); three stars meant "Good: a solid and competitive example of an established game style." Nintendo Power was Nintendo of America's own magazine, so its reviews are the console maker's view of its platform. Undated scores are from the review table in the game's Wikipedia article, limited to reviews of the Nintendo 64 version.

Before you buy

This is the North American cartridge. The PAL and Japanese releases are separate releases that sell for about the same loose and for somewhat more complete. Fake risk is low on a cart this cheap, so the usual advice is enough: look at the photos of the actual cartridge and manual. A complete copy with box and manual costs several times the loose price, and sealed copies cost far more again.
