About Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage

The king took him in at a very young age, but Alaron is now old enough to realize that he was adopted deciding to set out on a quest to track his own heritage. Along his journey, Alaron has had the fortune of meeting up with a party of others that are looking for adventure. You can choose to play as any of 13 characters. A more or less traditional role-playing game, AIDYN CHRONICLES: The First Mage is a brilliant mix of interaction, fighting, and extensive exploration. All of the battles take place in an innovative turn-based system, challenging you to handle both combat and real-time strategy. All of the characters and environments in the game are rendered in full 3D, and the characters have complete freedom in their ranges of movement. There's more territory in the game's expanses than you'll ever get a chance to see, and the sheer diversity of the character types is really impressive. If you like role-playing games, you'll want to check out this installment of Aidyn Chronicles.

A role-playing game on the N64 whose own period reviewers found more good intentions than good play.

Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage is a role-playing game developed by H2O Entertainment and published by THQ. It reached North America in March 2001 and the PAL regions in August of that year. You play Alaron, a young squire who has been poisoned and goes looking for a cure, in a 3D world with a party system and turn-based combat.

Electronic Gaming Monthly's June 2001 review called it a well-intentioned role-playing game that leans on the familiar trappings of every sword-and-sorcery epic, and the magazine's staff had joked a month earlier about finding an RPG on the N64 at all. It is a game for players who want a role-playing game on the system, not one that competes with the best of the library.

How it was made

Developed by H2O Entertainment for THQ. Christoph Klug is credited as designer and Christopher Bailey as programmer.

“What was to be the first true RPG on Nintendo 64 has turned out to be the biggest waste of shelf space in video game history.”

— Game Informer, May 2001

“Another game that leads you on, promising to be great, but which disappoints when you actually play it. It’s a cliché, but this is for RPG nuts only.”

— N64 Magazine, June 2001

“The battle system is the game’s only high point, and even there, it’s little more than a lift of the Shining Force engine.”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, June 2001

“Though promising an enthralling story, Aidyn Chronicles instead features less than stellar visuals and a bland soundtrack. If THQ can fix Aidyn’s preliminary maladies, it could have an interesting game and a much-needed N64 RPG.”

— GamePro, January 2001

Before you buy

The US cartridge sits well above the middle of the library, in line with other 2001 releases, and the PAL release costs considerably more than the US one, loose and complete. A gray-cartridge variant is also listed, so check which one a listing is selling. Fakes are a risk at this price, so ask for a photo of the board: a cart that boots proves nothing. The game saves to a Controller Pak, not to the cartridge, so budget for one. The Expansion Pak is optional; Nintendo listed the game among those it enhances.
