An odd-one-out Alex Kidd adventure that began life as a Japanese game based on a manga, and it is a fair middle-of-the-road pickup.

Alex Kidd: High-Tech World is an action-adventure with platform and puzzle-solving elements, developed and published by Sega. It is a modified version of the Japanese Master System game Anmitsu Hime, released in Japan on July 19, 1987, which was itself based on a manga series. The Western version came out in North America in June 1989 and in Europe in 1989.

Because it was not conceived as an Alex Kidd game in Japan, it sits awkwardly in the series. Other than Alex, none of the characters established in the earlier Alex Kidd games appear, and Alex has a brother, James, who is never mentioned anywhere else.

“The third game in the phenomenally successful Alex Kidd story - and probably the worst. This is a very frustrating game due to the fact that every time you die you háve to start at the beginning again. Marginally addictive but extremely tedious.”

— Sega Pro, November 1991

“A continuation of the Alex Kidd saga, this is essentially much of the same - more wacko platform action with loads of bonuses and other bits and bobs”

— Mean Machines, May 1992

“A continuation of the Alex Kidd saga, this is essen¬ tially much of the same • more wacko platform action with loads of bonuses and other bits and bobs. Again, the graphics and sound are really good, but there's nothing that makes this any better than the original.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“The most popular MS character after Sonic, Alex Kidd faces some tough challenges in Hi Tek World. Fast platform action and cute graphics make this one a winner.”

— Sega Master Force, September 1993

Before you buy

Three releases exist: the US cart, the European cart and the Japanese cart. The European cart is cheaper loose, but a complete European copy costs a little more than a complete US one, so decide whether you want the box before choosing a region. The Japanese cart costs noticeably more than the US one in both conditions, and it is a different, smaller shape that does not fit a Western console without an adapter. Loose, this is an ordinary price, and the look-alike risk is low. Check that the manual is there, since it is the part most often missing from a complete copy.
