A cheerful rock-punching platformer that was built into many Master System consoles, which makes the standalone cartridge the optional extra.
Alex Kidd in Miracle World is a platform game developed and published by Sega. It reached Japan on November 1, 1986, North America in December 1986 and Europe in 1987. Alex travels through Miracle World to save the city of Radactian from Janken the Great, collecting gold, buying useful items in shops and breaking rocks with his fist, across eleven different locations according to Computer Entertainer's review.
Mean Machines Sega called it the first game in the series and still one of the best, praising a blend of platforming and puzzles that works well even if the graphics are not outstanding. It was later built into many Master System and Master System II consoles, so plenty of players met it without ever owning the cartridge.
How it was made
Credited to Sega as developer and publisher, with Kotaro Hayashida as designer, Papa Kouichi as programmer, Rieko Kodama as artist and Tokuhiko Uwabo as composer.

“The first, and ultimately the best, of the Alex Kidd adventures. With so much to do and so many different ways of doing it this is one of those games that you will keep coming back to even when you háve finished it completely.”
“This is the first in the Alex Kidd series, and it's still one of the best. The blend of platforming and puz¬ zles works well and although the graphics aren't so hot they don't detract from this entertaining plat¬ form romp.”
“This is undoubtedly his most successful attempt. It was designed In competition to Nintendo’s Mario and uses many of the same popular and successful elements. Essential Sega software.”

How the Sega Master System version differs
From 1990 a slightly different version was built into US, Australian and European Master System II consoles, and some Australian and European original Master Systems.
The built-in version shows Alex eating a hamburger instead of onigiri when changing targets on the map.
The cartridge uses button 2 to hit and button 1 to jump; the built-in version inverts those controls.

Before you buy
Three releases exist here: the US cart, the European cart and the Japanese cart. The European cart is much cheaper loose, but a complete European copy usually costs more than a complete US one, so decide whether you want the box before shopping by region. The Japanese cart costs a little more than the US one loose and about the same complete, and it is a different, smaller shape that does not fit a Western console without an adapter. Loose, this is above the typical price for its year but not an expensive cart, and the look-alike risk is low. Check that the manual is there, since it is the part most often missing from a complete copy.
