Also released on: Arcade · PlayStation 3 · Linux · Wii · Sega Mega Drive/Genesis · Android · PC (Microsoft Windows) · iOS · Mac · Xbox 360 · Sega Master System/Mark III · Sega Game Gear · Nintendo 3DS. We haven’t priced or authenticated those versions yet.

Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Sega Master System version

An 8-bit Streets of Rage II that differs a lot from the Mega Drive game, and among the priciest European-only carts.

Streets of Rage II on the Master System was developed by Japan System House and published by Sega, released in Europe in February 1994. The 8-bit versions on the Master System and Game Gear are quite different from the Mega Drive original, and from each other.

How it was made

Developed by Japan System House and published by Sega.

What the press said at the time

“However, I sometimes felt the response to commands lagged a bit. Otherwise, this is good stuff, if not pushing back the barriers for the Master System.”

— Mean Machines Sega, March 1994

How the Sega Master System version differs

The Master System version has different levels and inferior graphics, and Max Thunder is omitted.

The Sega Genesis version

A great Genesis brawler with a loud, club-ready soundtrack, priced above the middle but not out of reach.

This is the Genesis version of Streets of Rage 2, known in Japan as Bare Knuckle II. Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding return from the first game, joined by Max Thunder and Eddie "Skate" Hunter. It was built by an ad hoc team of companies led by Ancient, with Ayano Koshiro as lead graphic designer and her brother Yuzo Koshiro composing the music.

It reached North America in 1992 and Japan and Europe in January 1993. In the United Kingdom it debuted at number one on the all-formats console game chart in January 1993. The Genesis game supports Sega's Activator, which was first shown at the January 1993 Consumer Electronics Show alongside Streets of Rage 2.

“Stacked against the Final Fights and Super Double Dragons of the world, Streets of Rage 2 more than fends for itself.”

— GamePro, February 1993

“To say that Streets of Rage II is the best beat’em-up on the Mega Drive may seem like a heady claim but with its 16 Mbits of action there can be no doubt that it’s the best.”

— Sega Mega Drive Advanced Gaming, March 1993

“This game has it all: great graphics, sound and playability. I guess I oughta find something to moan about, though. Wait a second, I can't!”

— Sega Force, April 1993

“An absolutely fantastic beat-’em-till-they-bleed offering. … Teamplay and versus modes make the overall game something to relish.”

— Sega Pro, April 1993

How the Sega Genesis version differs

In the North American version, Blaze's flying kick sprite was toned down, and Mr. X no longer smokes a cigar as in the Japanese version.

Skate is called Sammy in Japan and Eddie elsewhere, and Max's surname is Hatchett in the European version.

Also on other platforms

Master System · Game Gear · Nintendo 3DS · Arcade

  • Game Gear. The Game Gear version does not show enemy names.
  • Arcade. The Mega-Play arcade version uses a regular credit system, replaces 1-ups with money bags, drops the timer and raises the difficulty.

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits above the middle. The European cart usually costs less than the US one, and the Japanese cart (Bare Knuckle 2) usually costs a bit more and has a different cartridge shape. A Not for Resale copy exists as well. It is a mainstream release, so there is little reason to pay extra for a doubtful listing.
